Immunizations

Tuesday March 8, 2005
vaccination.jpg Most visitors to Africa face the unwelcome task of deciding what vaccinations might be needed before going on vacation. Yellow Fever is currently the only vaccine that is required by law upon entering many African countries. But usually it is only required if you are entering from a country where yellow fever is still doing its nasty business. Cholera is occasionally required but has long since proved to be a useless vaccination and often your doctor will just stamp your International Vaccination Card to say you've had it.

In most cases you will be strongly recommended to get the Typhoid, Hepatitis A and Diptheria vaccines. Your Tetanus and Polio vaccinations should also be up to date. For a list of recommended vaccinations per African country see Netdoctor.co.uk. Find out what shots you need to get at least 3 months before you travel. Rabies, for example, requires 3 separate visits.

For more information and a list of travel clinics see my Health and Safety category.
