Situated at the foot of the Atlas Mountains, the imperial city of Marrakech in Morocco has long drawn tourists from all over the world. Its souqs (markets) are fascinating to walk through and the central square (Djemaa El Fna) hosts whirling dervishes, snake charmers, and delicious food every night. There are gardens, palaces and mosques to enjoy at every turn. But Marrakech is also smelly, polluted, crowded and overwhelming. Hassling tourists is a common pastime (although the authorities are trying to curb this) and you'll be asked for money when you take photographs or watch performers. If you take it in stride you'll have a great time. There are also plenty of peaceful spots and roof-top cafes where you can escape the hustle and bustle.
