Africa's Poverty in the Spotlight with Live 8 and G8
Saturday July 2, 2005
Africa is in the news a lot these days, Live 8 is underway today and the G8 summit is happening next week. Africa has taken the center stage with debt relief and other anti-poverty measures high on the G8's agenda. Hopefully all this focus on Africa will amount to long-term action by First World governments and the corrupt politicians who still have control over the lives of too many hardworking Africans.
I was following an interesting web log by Kim Bouldon-Jones who has been working in Ethiopian and Zimbabwean HIV clinics this past month. She mentioned that Brad Pitt visiting Ethiopia a few months ago probably did more to raise AIDS awareness than any aid organization could hope to achieve after years of hard work. So here's hoping the pop stars singing at Live 8 will actually make a difference and visit Africa with the paparazzi in tow.
