Tuberculosis (TB) Emergency in Africa

Thursday September 1, 2005
Earlier this week the World Health Organisation (WHO) declared Tuberculosis (TB) an emergency in Africa. According to the WHO over 540,000 Africans are killed annually by the disease and those numbers are growing. Despite the mortality rate, there is a cure for TB. But the lack of finances and health infrastructure means the drugs aren't delivered to the right people at the right time.

As a traveler to Africa you should be aware of Tuberculosis and its symptoms. But you can get a vaccine before you go and/or get tested for TB upon your return. Since TB is passed on through coughing and sneezing you have to be at fairly close counters with a person infected with TB. If you are riding on public transport try to avoid passengers coughing a lot. Sleeping in hostels and visiting hospitals are also areas where TB tends to spread easily. Read my article about TB in Africa for more information.
