3 Tourists Die Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro

Thursday January 5, 2006
The BBC reports that 3 tourists have died (including at least 1 American) while attempting to climb up to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest peak. According to the report, sudden weather shifts caused a rock slide killing the three climbers and injuring four others including guides.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is becoming increasingly popular with tourists because you don't need any special equipment to reach the summit. But it's important to note the climb is not easy. Standing at 19,340 feet (5896m) this is the world's tallest free-standing mountain. You have to be quite fit, take at least 7 days over the trek and always use top quality equipment. And as with all adventure activities even if you are well prepared there's always a risk involved.

The Western Breach, which was closed since this accident, has reopened in December 2007. However, anyone attempting to use this route should be very cautious as the underlying risks of rockfall are still present.
