Getting Close to the Great White Shark

Thursday February 2, 2006
sharkimageblog.jpg Since diving with Great White Sharks is becoming an increasingly popular tourist draw in South Africa I was lucky enough to get some great photos of this rather crazy pastime. These images of cage diving with Great Whites were taken in Gansbaai (about 100 miles from Cape Town), South Africa.

Since nobody has ever managed to keep a Great White in captivity, cage diving is really the only way you can get close and personal with this 20 foot eating machine. While there is some concern that 'chumming and baiting' the animals for tourists' adrenalin rush may be adding to the increased shark attacks on swimmers along the South African coast, this has not been proven. In the meantime the shark cage is scary but safe and with Great White images like this, who can resist going eyeball to eyeball with "Jaws"?
