Gay Travel in Africa

Tuesday November 14, 2006
The South African parliament voted to legalize same-sex marriage on Tuesday. It is the first African government to do so. Gay rights are upheld in South Africa's constitution, which is in stark contrast to its neighbors' policies, where homosexuality is still considered illegal and taboo. South Africa is probably the best destination for gay couples because the law will protect gay rights and there's also a very lively and open gay scene in the country's major cities, notably Cape Town.

If you're gay and interested in traveling to Africa it's important to read up on your destination's legal and social attitudes to same-sex couples. For example, Morocco has long been a popular destination for gay men, but unwitting tourists may be quite surprised that homosexuality is considered illegal and Moroccans are generally quite socially conservative. You'll see male friends holding hands throughout Africa but this has nothing to do with their sexual orientation, so don't be fooled. For more information read my article about gay and lesbian travel in Africa.
