Where is this in Africa? (5)

Tuesday February 27, 2007
elephantblog.bmp This is the fifth installment in the Where is this in Africa? series. I put up a photo taken somewhere in Africa and you guess where it is.

This week we're looking at a lion resting in a tree. While several parks and reserves in this part of Africa claim to be unique in being home to these tree clambering lions, this was taken just up the road from where you can view the rare mountain gorilla. The Nile isn't too far away either.

The answer: The photo was taken in Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda. It's thought that lions climb trees in this part of Africa to get away from flies and to enjoy a cool breeze. Tree climbing lions are also commonly spotted in Lake Manyara and Tarangire in Tanzania.

Anouk,
I think the most notable groups of lion that think they are birds are at Manyara near Arusha in Tansania and at Ishasha on the southern side of the Queen Elizabeth National Park in Uganda but I’ve seen several in trees in Swaziland so there may be outbreaks of avianism in Panthera Leo all over!

Combining the lions with Mountain Gorillas would narrow the search down to Ishasha but with the nearest point of the Nile (The White Nile in this area) over 250 miles away this may not be the place you want BUT as I have no better solution I’ll stick to Ishasha.
