Cycling From France to South Africa
Eric and Amaya have recently completed an epic cycling trip from France to Cape Town. It has taken them 1 year 5 months and 5 days to pedal over 19,000 miles (30,677 kms) through 32 countries (29 in Africa). Now in Cape Town, with their celebratory champagne drunk, they decided to continue the madness. Figuring they're only spending 20 Euros a day cycling, it just didn't make economic sense to head home just yet. So, I’m happy to announce we will still be able to enjoy their updates and photos as they travel in their economic and environmentally friendly manner (as most Africans do too).
Some excerpts from their last update:
Certainly there were trying times when we had our doubts about ever reaching South Africa. The long slog through Mali, flooded roads in the Congo and most recently the bitter battle with winds and sand in Namibia were all tough tests of our determination and will to succeed. It is no exaggeration to say that we would have never completed the tour had we not had the good fortune to be helped and encouraged by so many kind individuals along the way.For Amaya and Eric's full account see their website and you can also donate to the charity they're doing it all for. We've decided to prolong the agony of cycling in order to avoid the agony of plunging back into a more conventional life during the throes of a European winter. It would be a pity to miss the sunsets on Mozambique's idyllic beaches, the climb up mist-shrouded Mt Kenya, jaunts through the colorful Maasai villages of Tanzania and encounters with the stone-wielding children of Ethiopia (after all it can't all be fun and games!).

I am sure I have passed them on the road! At the time I thought they must be doing some sort of around SA cycling trip, but never thought it could be from France to Cape Town! Amazing!
I met both of them in Turkana. Amazing trip.
