Land lines in many African countries were unpredictable and expensive, and it was a small miracle if your call made it through. Cell phones have truly revolutionized communications in Africa.

Whether you're making a hotel reservation or calling a friend in Africa, you have to know what international codes to dial to get your call through. (You should also figure out what time it is before calling, so you don't wake anyone up!).
