African Festivals and Events in September
Whales, Voodoo, the New Year, Ramadan, the harvest -- will all be celebrated in Africa this September. Ethiopians have two big events coming up; they will celebrate Meskel a Christian festival, and they will also celebrate their New Year as they greet 2001. That's right, it's still the year 2000 in Ethiopia and last New Year's Eve, the country enjoyed some huge millennium celebrations. The Southern Right Whales are out and about on South Africa's coastline and the picturesque town of Hermanus celebrates with a week long festival. Ghanaians celebrate their harvest while the Guen people of Togo look to the voodoo priests to see if the coming year will hold more joy than sorrow.
Ramadan will start on the 1st of September this year and many African Muslims will be fasting every day. Don't miss the big feast at the end of Ramadan, which will be at sundown on the 30th of September (or as soon as the new moon is sighted).
