Chugging Along in Old-Fashioned Luxury

Friday September 26, 2008
rovos rail south africa train travel luxury Rovos Rail is a private railway company in South Africa which markets itself as the most luxurious train in the world. And it's probably right. Vintage wood-paneled carriages are pulled by steam locomotives, and chug along some of South Africa's most scenic routes. Passengers dine on 5 course dinners in a dining car fit for royalty and some of the train suites even have full baths.

The most popular trip on Rovos Rail is from Pretoria to Cape Town. This three day journey was recently enjoyed by About.com's Honeymoon Guide, Susan Breslow Sardone. Read her report and enjoy some wonderful photos from her trip. The joy of traveling by train is that it's slow and relaxing. But what can make this journey a little awkward is the stark contrast between the opulence inside the train and the obvious poverty of the townships that you pass through whenever you reach a big town or city. Susan reflects on this in her report.

Another popular trip Rovos Rail offers is from Pretoria to the Victoria Falls. This is also a three day trip and it runs through Botswana and up to Zimbabwe. It's a lovely, romantic journey and worth doing if you can afford it.
