Cheap Flights to SA and Dakar from the US

By , About.com GuideNovember 7, 2008

Follow me on:

Granger Bay, Cape Town, South Africa I feel like a spokesperson for South African Airways but they're really putting some excellent deals out there that I have to share with you. Especially since the US Dollar is currently very good value in South Africa and I'm sure you could use a vacation after the stress of the election.

You can fly from New York or Washington DC to Johannesburg for $999 round trip and that includes ALL taxes and security fees (and wine on board - yum), so no hidden costs on top of this. There are some very good add-on fares if you wish to travel on to Cape Town or Durban. The same goes for those who wish to leave from a different US city.

Flights to Dakar (Senegal) from New York or Washington DC costs $1,076 with ALL taxes and fees included. Despite the fact that Dakar is only half as far away as South Africa, but is slightly more expensive, is just a testament to how weird the world of airfare pricing is. Nevertheless, this is an excellent deal for West Africa.

You have to book and pay by December 5th 2008. And you can travel anytime between November 15, 2008 and March 31, 2009. There are some holiday blackout dates of course for both fares: From U.S. to Africa: 17 -26 December, 2008 and From Africa to U.S: 1-6 January, 2009.

Unfortunately this ad is deceiving. Correct me if wrong, but the outbound flight has to be before december 15. I tried to get a ticket from Dec 27 or so until Jan 7 or so. I was quoted over 4 thousand dollars…. Any ideas/help? I live in Senegal and want my brother to come visit me for new years eve!

Those dates may have already sold out, so try different dates around that time if possible. Airlines will keep aside a certain number of seats per plane to be sold at the lowest price. Once they sell, the regular fare kicks in. If you’re getting a quote of $4000, then it means this flight is getting very full. Which is not too surprising given the time of year. It would be best to call SAA, or have your brother call them, and find out exactly which dates the sale fare is still available for.

Don’t forget to check out Asian flight carriers. They travel to and from Africa, US, Europe and Asia.
