Most Popular Africa Travel Content for 2008

Friday December 19, 2008
south african airways at nelspruit airport I thought it would be interesting to re-visit the most popular content on the Africa Travel site for 2008. The countdown is in (Ki)Swahili.

By far the most searched for, and hence the most popular content on this site for 2008 was: Cheap Flights to Africa. I ran a poll earlier this year to find out what was stopping people from visiting Africa, and the results showed that if the flights were cheaper, people would visit more frequently.

While South African Airlines had some great deals this year from the US to South Africa and Senegal, other airlines like North American Airlines stopped their direct service to Ghana making it more expensive to get to since passengers had to either opt for Delta, or go via Europe. Now that the US Dollar is shaping up, traveling to Africa via Europe will hopefully be a cheaper option in 2009. Flying to Africa via the Gulf States became an interesting alternative for many people in 2008. Direct flights from the US to Morocco and Egypt stayed their course for the most part during 2008. For more information about getting to Africa, check out How to Get a Cheap Flight to Africa.

The second most popular article in 2008 was Egypt Map and Basic Facts. I'm hoping it's a sign that people are planning many trips to Egypt, but I imagine that school projects play a big role in the popularity of this piece. People like facts and maps regardless of travel plans. But of course, Egypt is Africa's most popular tourist destination.

Morocco Travel Tips is a top contender every week. Morocco is such a wonderful destination to travel around independently and basic, practical information works very well. Ferry schedules and train schedules are popular especially when they're in English!

Most people traveling to Africa need vaccinations so it's no surprise that Vaccinations and travel to Africa is high scorer every week, but more so this past year than ever before. Did people travel to more remote destinations and need more vaccinations?

How to Climb Kilimanjaro is a short piece I wrote when I first started writing for this site almost four years ago. It still does very well every week and it amazes me how much general interest there is in climbing Mount Kilimanjaro. It's really not an easy thing to do by any stretch of the imagination.

There you have it, 2008's top five. My personal favorites usually aren't the most popular, but How to Use a Squat Toilet did get some healthy interest when it was written. And sometimes it's simply up to the ever mystical workings of Google.
