I'm saddened to see that Uganda's capital, Kampala saw some terrible clashes between rioters and police this afternoon. The BBC reports that several people have been killed. The violence started as demonstrators were in the city-center protesting against the government's attempts to stop the King of Buganda from visiting a region near Kampala. The government feared violence would erupt if he did visit, unfortunately this seems to have happened anyway.
This may be an isolated case, but it's worth checking the news in the next coming days. An official Travel Alert has not yet been issued by the US or UK Governments. As of Friday, September 11, tourists traveling to and from Uganda are not experiencing any problems.
In the past decade, Uganda has been one of Africa's most peaceful nations and Kampala is one of the few African capitals in this region that is actually pleasant and relatively safe. Let's hope it remains that way after today. Most visitors travel through Kampala to see the extremely rare mountain gorillas, Uganda's biggest tourist attraction.
