I'm taking off for Ghana this weekend. I'll be spending ten days traveling around Accra, the Cape Coast, Kumasi, and the Volta region. I am traveling with Jolinaiko Eco Tours, an excellent tour operator, locally owned and based out of Accra. Rather than rent a car and attempt to navigate the notorious traffic jams in Accra and Kumasi, I'll be in the capable hands of a driver/guide. Hiring a driver/guide seemed like a good option since I'll be on my own, and this way I can feel free to enjoy the nightlife, markets and sights without worrying about personal safety and marriage proposals. Proposals apparently come thick and fast if you travel alone as a woman in Ghana.
Along the way I'll be staying at La-Paradise Inn in Accra, located in the center of town, in the Osu district. One of the best reasons for Ghanaians to stay here (according to the web site) is: "if you want a smooth living in Ghana, away from angry relatives, then you are in the right hands". I chose it for their reasonable rates and lovely looking pool. It will be a humid 92 F every day.
On the coast in Elmina, I'll be staying at the newly opened Stumble Inn, an excellent option for volunteers, beach lovers, and budget travelers. In Kumasi, the Catering Resthouse will be my home for a few nights. It's situated in a large garden, a "tranquil oasis", and by all accounts that is what a few days in Kumasi calls for. I will end my trip along the lovely banks of the River Volta, at TripAdvisor's #1 rated B&B in Akosombo -- Aylos Bay. My last day will be spent visiting Atsiekpoe village. Not just because it's such a great name, but Jolinaiko runs several community projects here and is building an eco-lodge. Several of my friends were kind enough to trust me with some money that will go towards constructing latrines for the local school.
I'll be stopping at all the major attractions en route, and also hope to catch a soccer match. I'm praying the Cape Coast Mysterious Ebusua Dwarfs will have something scheduled. That has to be the best name in the history of all football clubs. Ghana is going to be a lot of fun. I'll tell you all about it when I get back, and of course show off my contemporary art piece as well.
