Actor/Activist George Clooney just got arrested outside the Sudanese Embassy in D.C. He was protesting the latest human rights abuses carried out by the Sudanese Government. Clooney has long been involved in raising awareness about atrocities in Darfur. He attended the historic referendum that split Sudan in half last year creating South Sudan as Africa's newest independent nation. The bout of malaria he contracted while in Sudan at the time probably got more attention than the raising of a new flag. But that's exactly why celebrities can actually make a difference, they attract eyeballs that would otherwise be looking the other way.
Celebrities may get involved with causes for their own gains, but it's undeniable that they can attract more attention than a local community worker making miracles happen in the face of great odds. The KONY 2012 video that went viral this week, is a case in point. Whatever the motive behind the video and regardless of how late in the game it has come along, the fact is more people now know where Uganda is and that the LRA is a disgusting organization. Amen to that I say.
