Cup of Nations in South Africa -- Dust off your vuvuzela and head to South Africa for the Cup of Nations from January 19 - February 2 (2013). Africa's biggest sporting event will take place in five stadiums throughout the country. Tofo, Mozambique - South Africans have been enjoying Mozambique's coast for decades, and international backpackers are now raving about it too. Mozambique is back on the travel map with a vengeance. Tofo in particular offers great beaches, snorkeling, fresh seafood and accommodation to suit all budgets. Its proximity to the lively capital Maputo is also a plus. 2012 could be the last year you beat the crowds if full moon parties and swimming with whale sharks sounds like fun. Elmina, Ghana - Most visitors that make it here tend head straight to the slave-trading fort (St George's Castle) which is well worth a trip to Ghana in itself. But it's the lively fishing village that made the strongest impression on me. Fantastic fish market, interesting old parts of town and enough color and life to keep you buzzing for weeks. Zanzibar Festivals, Tanzania - Two major festivals are drawing an increasingly enthusiastic, international audience to the already formidable delights of Zanzibar.
