Where should you go in Africa in 2013? Here are my top  recommendations for adventurous, relaxing and always awe-inspiring African destinations for the upcoming year.

Cup of Nations in South Africa -- Dust off your vuvuzela and head to South Africa for the Cup of Nations from January 19 - February 2 (2013). Africa's biggest sporting event will take place in five stadiums throughout the country. The organization and infrastructure is all in place from the 2010 World Cup, and the atmosphere promises to be electric! More about the 2013 Cup of Nations...

Tofo, Mozambique - maputo beach, mozambiqueSouth Africans have been enjoying Mozambique's coast for decades, and international backpackers are now raving about it too. Mozambique is back on the travel map with a vengeance. Tofo in particular offers great beaches, snorkeling, fresh seafood and accommodation to suit all budgets. Its proximity to the lively capital Maputo is also a plus. 2012 could be the last year you beat the crowds if full moon parties and swimming with whale sharks sounds like fun. South Luangwa, Zambia - One of the best safari experiences you can ever hope to have. South Luangwa has it all, a river to cruise on during the wet season, wonderful walking safaris to give your butt a rest from bouncing around in a vehicle all day, and plenty of wildlife . There's lodging to suit all budgets and styles, from tented camps to simple rondavels. Zambia is a friendly and stable country, it's also home to the Victoria Falls which offers the perfect add-on before or after a safari. More about travel to Zambia ...

Elmina, Ghana - Elmina, GhanaMost visitors that make it here tend head straight to the slave-trading fort (St George's Castle) which is well worth a trip to Ghana in itself. But it's the lively fishing village that made the strongest impression on me. Fantastic fish market, interesting old parts of town and enough color and life to keep you buzzing for weeks. The great budget accommodation on gorgeous beaches nearby make it even better. More about Ghana's top attractions ...

Wild Coast, South Africa - The Wild Coast is an incredibly beautiful stretch of coastline in South Africa's Eastern Cape area (formerly known as Transkei). Ideal for diving, fishing, hiking and surfing this remote area has long attracted visitors looking to get away from it all. The Xhosa culture along this stretch of coast is also a major attraction. More about the Eastern Cape...

Zanzibar Festivals, Tanzania - Two major festivals are drawing an increasingly enthusiastic, international audience to the already formidable delights of Zanzibar. In 2013 the Sauti za Busara Music Festival will be held from  February 14 - 17. It's a wonderful event, celebrating music, theater and arts. The 2013 Zanzibar International Film Festival will take place in June 29 - July 7. This is East Africa's largest film and arts festival, showcasing a broad spectrum of African and International creative works on the theme "A Season of Visions". More about Zanzibar...

Eco-friendly Kenya -- Avoid the safari crowds and queues of minibuses, especially during the annual great migration, and head to Kenya's Conservancies instead this year. The conservancies adjoin the the parks, and share the abundant wildlife, so you don't miss out on anything, but the crowds of tourists. The lodging is more eco-friendly, and local communities benefit directly from your stay. Find out more...

Good list, but don’t forget about Ivory Coast. 500km of perfect beaches, friendly people and amazing food. Try Grand Bassam which is newly on the UNESCO world heritage list.
