August Festivals in Africa

Sunday July 10, 2005
If you're visiting Africa this August and happen to be in Morocco, Zambia, South Africa or Tunisia, then make a detour to see one of these events:
  • Imilchil Marriage Feast. The Imilchil Marriage Feast is a Berber marriage festival where up to forty couples tie the knot. It takes place in Imilchil in the Middle-High Atlas Mountains near Marrakech. The festival is a great way to experience Berber culture including music and dance.

    Where: Marrakech (Morocco)
    When: 26-28 August. (2005)

  • International Festival of Carthage. Tunisia's premier arts festival is held every year with the major performances (and movies) taking place in a well-preserved Roman amphitheatre. International stars have included Ray Charles, James Brown and Joe Cocker. But the more interesting performances are usually the local ones.

    Where: Tunis (Tunisia)
    When: 10 July - 15 August (2005)

  • Hermanus Wine and Food Festival. If combining great food, wine and a spot of whale-watching sounds as enticing to you as it does to me, then head to Hermanus this August. The event attracts South Africa's best wine producers as well as its best olive and cheese farmers.

    Where: Hermanus (South Africa)
    When: 5-7 August. (2005)

  • Zambia Agricultural and Commercial Show. Personally I love agricultural shows, but if admiring the perfect bovine isn't your cup of tea, this event is still worth visiting. The music and performing arts that accompany the poultry and tractors is first rate according to Whatsonwhen.com.

    Where: Lusaka (Zambia)
    When: 28 July - 1 August (2005)

If you know of any other events in Africa that are of interest to visitors please let me know.
