Bomb Blasts in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt

Saturday July 23, 2005
Sharm el-Sheikh is a popular Egyptian resort on the Red Sea. At this time of year charter flights full of tourists from all over Europe and the Middle East arrive daily. The attacks happened at 1am (Egyptian time) when the bars and market area were packed with tourists. The BBC reports that at least 88 people have been killed and many more injured. The terrorist attacks included bombs going off in the old market area and in front of two hotels in the resort.

Saturday was a national holiday marking Egypt's 1952 Revolution. The attacks are thought to have been carried out by the Abdullah Azzam Brigades of Syria and Egypt (with possible links to al-Qaeda), the same movement which apparently carried out the recent attacks in Cairo.

The BBC is receiving accounts from tourists at Sharm el-Sheik describing the terrifying scene. If you are planning a vacation to Egypt in the future, does this latest attack affect your plans?
