Dealing With Poverty While Traveling in Africa

Thursday August 25, 2005
When you're traveling in Africa it won't take long before you feel some guilt about having so much when those around you have so little. Regardless of whether you're a backpacker on a budget of $10 a day or on a luxury tented safari, you will most likely be better off than most locals you meet. While you may be tempted, it's impossible to give to everyone who asks you for money.

So here's a quick suggestion. Try and visit a local health clinic, school or hospital while you are traveling around. Find out what their basic needs are and get a reliable address from a person in charge. Local charities can also help by providing a reliable address to send things to. Upon your return back home, get your local community involved and collect the items that are needed, or buy them yourself. Send them directly to the school, clinic or hospital. Better yet, find someone who is traveling to the same place so the goods can be delivered in person. Books, chalk, syringes, bandages, toys for children, as well as hard cash can make a difference.
