African Festivals in October

If you're traveling in Africa during October, here are some festivals that are being celebrated around the continent:
- Woodstock, South Africa: This huge youth festival attracts more than 15 thousand people. The event showcases musicians, extreme sportsmen and women as well as plenty of food, street performers and wakeboarders.

When: 29 September - 2 October (2005) - Ramadan: Every devout Muslim fasts for 30 days during Ramadan. No food or drink should pass the lips from sunrise to sundown. Travelers who fast along with their Muslim friends during this time are much appreciated. Tempers may be short during Ramadan so try and be as culturally sensitive as possible. The end of Ramadan is marked by the festival of Eid and celebrations last for several days.

- Kreol Festival: The Seychelles in the Indian ocean are a popular holiday destination for many Europeans. The beaches are among the best Africa has to offer and the culture is as fascinating as the snorkelling. Break up the sunbathing with a little bit of creole food and dance at this colorful annual festival and you won't regret it.

When: 22 - 30 October (2005) - Diwali: Commonly known as the 'Festival of Light', Diwali is celebrated by Hindu's around the world and Mauritius is no exception. Lights, firecrackers and sweets are abundant in every Hindu household on the island.
