Places to Avoid in Africa
Wednesday November 2, 2005
Unfortunately there are ongoing wars and political disturbances in Africa that visitors to the continent should be aware of. The US Department of State has a list of countries with travel advisories, as does the UK Foreign Office. If you are neither American nor British you should check your own government's website.
Right now the following countries, which tourists are likely to visit under normal circumstances, are out of bounds for the next few weeks:
- Ethiopia: Recent election results are causing chaos, especially in the capital Addis Ababa, as opposition to the ruling Government claims polling fraud. People are getting shot and beaten.
- Zanzibar (Tanzania): This popular island off the coast of Tanzania has seen a lot of unrest this past week. Elections were held a few days ago and opposition groups are protesting the results. Tear gas and beatings have been commonplace in Stone Town and other areas on the island. Tanzania holds nationwide elections mid-December so clashes may occur around that time as well.
It's also a good idea to check news and media resources covering Africa before you go.
