Keeping an Eye on Kenya this Week

Sunday November 20, 2005
If you're planning to visit Kenya this week, watch the news closely -- there could be some political scuffles on the horizon. Kenyans are going to the polls on Monday, November 21 to vote in a referendum on a new constitution. The current President, Mwai Kibaki is on the "yes" side symbolized by a banana (to make it easier for the illiterate voters). On the "no" side, symbolized by an orange, is a group of ministers who have recently broken ranks with the President and believe this new constitution will give too much power to the president.

According to the BBC news, 9 people have been killed during the campaign and you can never be sure there won't be more violence once the results come out. Tourist areas aren't usually affected by political disturbances since they are far away from the metropolitan areas, but just watch the news, and if you are in Kenya, keep an eye out for large groups of people on the march.
