Direct flights from the US to Africa are few in number and schedules change frequently. If you don't live on the East coast, you are basically out of luck. I've listed all the current direct flights to Africa below, so you can avoid long layovers in Europe or the Middle East. Direct flights may not be the the cheapest option, but they save time. Direct Flights From the US to Egypt

EgyptAir operates a daily schedule from New York (JFK) to Cairo (CAI), the capital city of Egypt. The flight departs New York (JFK) in the early evening and arrives at noon in Cairo the following day. The flight time is around 11 hours. The return flight departs Cairo mid-morning, and arrives back in New York on the same day, in the afternoon.

Delta Airlines also offers a daily service from New York (JFK) to Cairo (CAI) departing late evening and arriving in Cairo late afternoon the following day. The return trip departs from Cairo late in the evening, arriving in New York early the next morning. The flights take about 11 hours each way.

Direct Flights From the US to South Africa

South African Airways fly direct to Johannesburg (JNB), South Africa's largest city, from New York (JFK) and Washington DC (IAD). The daily flight from New York (JFK) leaves in the late morning, arriving in Johannesburg at around 8 am the next morning (very convenient for onward travel in the region). The flight takes around 17 hours. The return flight leaves Johannesburg in the early evening, arriving the following day in New York in the early morning.

South African Airways daily flight from Washington DC leaves in the late afternoon, arriving in Johannesburg in the late afternoon the following day. The flight takes around 17 hours and stops in Dakar (Senegal en route for an hour). The return flight leaves Johannesburg in the evening, arriving in Washington DC the following day, early in the morning.

Delta Airlines fly direct to Johannesburg from Atlanta (ATL) leaving daily from Atlanta in the early evening and arriving in Johannesburg the next day, in the late afternoon. The flight takes around 16 hours. The return flights leave Johannesburg in the evening and arrive in Atlanta early the next morning.

Direct Flights From the US to Morocco

Royal Air Moroc operates daily flights from New York (JFK) to Casablanca (CMN), Morocco's commercial capital. The flights leave New York late afternoon, and arrive in Casablanca early the next morning, you can easily get domestic connections to Fes or Marrakech (or take the train). The flight takes about eight hours. The return flight leaves Casablanca at noon, arriving back in New York, mid afternoon on the same day.

Direct Flights From the US to Ghana

Delta Airlines has direct flights from Atlanta (ATL) and New York (JFK) to Accra (ACC), the capital of Ghana. The flights from Atlanta leave several times per week in the late evening, arriving in Accra mid-afternoon the next day. The flight takes just under 12 hours. The return flight leaves Accra at midnight arriving back in Atlanta the next morning.

Delta's direct flight from New York (JFK) to Accra (ACC) leaves late afternoon, arriving in Accra early the next morning. The flight operates several times per week and takes around 11 hours. The return flight leaves Accra mid-morning, arriving back in New York late afternoon.

United Airlines has daily direct flights from Washington DC (IAD) to Accra (ACC). The flight leaves Washington DC in the late evening and arrives in Accra around midday the following day. It takes about 10.5 hours. The return flight leaves Accra late evening, arriving in DC early the next morning.

Direct Flights From the US to Senegal

South African Airways has a daily direct flight from Washington DC (IAD) to Dakar (DKR), the capital of Senegal. The flight leaves Washington in the afternoon, arriving in Dakar early in the morning the following day. The flight takes around 9 hours.

Delta Airlines flies direct from New York (JFK) to Dakar (DKR) several times per week. The flight leaves late afternoon, arriving very early the next morning. The flight takes around 8.5 hours. The return flight leaves Dakar early morning, arriving back in New York mid-afternoon.

Direct Flights From the US to Ethiopia

Ethiopian Airlines flies from Washington DC (IAD) to Addis Ababa (ADD), the capital of Ethiopia, four times a week with a fuel stop in Rome on the return flight. Flights leave daily during the summer months. Flights leave Washington DC in the morning, and arrive in Addis early the following day. Return flights leave Addis late in the evening and arrive early the next morning back in Washington DC.

Direct Flights From the US to Nigeria

Arik Air based in Nigeria, flies from JFK to Lagos (Nigeria) three times a week. You have to e-mail to make a booking and for up to date schedule information.

United Airlines has a direct service on the new Boeing 787, from its Houston hub (IAH) to Lagos, Nigeria, beginning Jan. 7, 2013.
