How to Make a Phone Call to Africa

Every country has an international dialing (calling) code. Before you call or phone anyone in Africa you'll need to know your own international dialing code that let's you place an international call (see below), as well as the country code of the country you are calling. From there you will usually dial a city code followed by the local phone number. Some countries like Benin don't have city codes because the network area is simply too small. It is common to list the city code before the phone number in any guide book or hotel web site, so that shouldn't be an issue for you.

If you are calling from:

  • US and Canada -- dial 011 before the country code.

  • Europe, New Zealand or South Africa -- dial 00 before the country code.

  • Australia -- dial 0011 before the country code.

    Cell Phones in Africa

Cell phones have revolutionized communication in Africa because the land lines were always shaky at best and people often had to wait years to get them installed. You will still need to dial the above country codes to reach someone on their cell phone in Africa, but the city codes may be different depending on their network, where they purchased their phone etc.
