Fes (Fez) Photo Gallery

Images of Fes, Morocco

From Anouk Zijlma, About.com

This Fes (Fez) photo gallery aims to give you a good idea of what it's like in the old-walled city of Fes, Morocco. The city of Fes was built in the 8th Century. Houses and shops were built around the main Mosques which were constructed in the center of the city. 5 miles (8km) of walls were built to protect the city from invaders.

What is remarkable is that little has changed in old Fes. The labyrinth of narrow streets (more than 9000) are still filled with artisans, shops and homes. Donkeys and bicycles are the only form of transport inside the city walls. Tiny doorways hide beautiful courtyards and light-filled apartments.

These photos of Fes were taken in October 2007. You really have to walk around, smell the mint, spices and donkey droppings and hear the call to prayer to fully appreciate Fes. People also don't generally like to be photographed, so if you visit, be sure to ask permission before you snap away.
