Zanzibar is an archipelago of islands in the Indian Ocean, just off the coast of Tanzania in East Africa. The two main islands most people visit are Zanzibar and Pemba. Zanzibar is popular with tourists because of its wonderful beaches and the interesting, well-preserved, Stone Town (a UNESCO World Heritage Site). The islands have a rich history due to their geographic location, as many cultures and civilizations have plied its shores for spices and slaves. The Arabic influence remains the strongest to date, with Islam being the predominant religion on the islands. Although part of Tanzania, Zanzibar is semi-autonomous and the people elect their own government.
Steve Outram is a travel photographer and he's responsible for these wonderful images of Zanzibar. Steve offers his own photographic tour of the islands and for more information please see his web site.
